DESIGN WITHOUT BORDERS
CONCEPT:
For this commercial and residential building, the aim is to provide spaces where people from different backgrounds and cultures can come together and build a community of their own, by providing opportunity for living, working, and socialization within the sustainable planned neighborhood. For the first floor, a community art gallery will be implemented to showcase the beautiful pieces made by nearby artists. Within this art gallery, movable display walls will be within the space to allow flexibility and benches for visitors to sit and take the time to absorb in the artwork. A theater space is also provided with a stage and projection screen, to allow the public space to be used for digital showings as well, making the space multipurpose. This is a space for people to come together and view art and media that creates conversation among them. The space will be designed to be inviting and spacious with wood finishes, clean white materials, neutral colors, with some pops of color to allow the artwork to speak for the rest of the space.

For the residential spaces on the second and third floor, studio and two bedroom apartments are provided to house those who travel here alone or with some family members and loved ones and want to make Malmo, Sweden their new home. The apartments will be designed to have a comforting and warm feeling by using a warm and bright color palette paired with warm wood finishes, and neutral colors to balance it out. For safety purposes, the residential entrance will be locked 24/7 and only residents who are provided with a swipe in card and pin can enter. Due to the orientation of the building, to let in as much sunlight as possible, a curtain wall system is placed to let light into the egress lobbies and hallways to prevent dark and uninviting spaces. To allow more light in on the top floor, skylights will also be placed into the roof system.
